APEC Human Resources Development Working Group on Mathematics Education
International comparison studies have found significantly different levels of achievement and practice in mathematics education in the East and West.
  • Asian educational systems generally produce students with a strong grasp of the content knowledge, with higher scores on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
  • Western systems have strengths in applying knowledge to real life situations. Many Western economies are among the most scientifically innovative in terms of such indicators as new scientific patents.
The pressing issue is how to combine the best of both systems.
Assessment: analyses of sample assessments, a searchable database of assessment items, and full assessments from APEC economies.
Standards: sample standards (in English) from 9 APEC economies with comparative analyses.

What are rubrics? Why use them? How can you design your own rubric? Download a complimentary rubric from Investigations, Tasks, and Rubrics to Teach and Assess Math. The book offers more than 220 tasks, 9 of which are correlated to rubrics like this one. Learn how the use of research-based assessment rubrics can inform your math teaching on an ongoing basis.

MRI is an online formative assessment tool designed to make teachers’ classroom instruction more effective. The MRI questions focus on number and operations and are based on content from about prior to grade six. The assessment tools have been used with grades four to eight students. They are questions that we expect and hope that all grades four to eight students can answer successfully.

There are three assessments in MRI—Whole Numbers, Decimals, and Fractions. Each assessment has two sections—the Interview and the Written Computation sections. The Interview (10–12 questions), done face-to-face, focuses on core reasoning strategies and understandings. We ask students questions, give them time to think, and listen to them explain. The Written Computation section is completed independently by students.

These assessments are free to educators for up to 160 students each @

Assessing To Learn & Learning To Assess from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

Assessment was a yearlong NCTM focus in 2005-2006. Their PD site, linked above, identifies resources from NCTM activities, journals, news bulletins, publications, websites, and E-Workshops that relate to assessment.

Tanya Braybrook

Math Assessment: An Achievement Diagnostic Profile by Tanya Braybrook

Many of you went to the YTAs Conference in September 2008 and saw Tanya Braybrook speak about the Math Profile Assessment Tool that she developed. If you were not at her conference talk, it is a student, teacher and parent friendly resource that can be used as part of an assessment for learning strategy in the classroom and at parent-student-teacher interviews. It assesses the curricular objectives on a regular basis, providing achievement information and clearly pinpoints areas of strength and weakness specific to each student. At the YTA conference, Tanya showed how to actively involve students in their own assessment as they routinely graph their assessment results.
